Quotes from 49ers training camp

Quotes from 49ers training camp
The 49ers just sent me a transcript of the best quotes from today's arrivals by players to Santa Clara. I will just copy and paste the quotes for you all.

TE Vernon Davis
On what he is expecting from Mike Singletary a :
I m expecting Coach Singletary to be tough on us from the start. No nonsense. He wants us to be a family and stick together, be there for one another and just play this game the way it is supposed to be played.
On whether he was preparing for this training camp to be his roughest training camp:
I got my mind right for it just like anything else. I think of it as just training camp. That s what I do and I m sure that s what my teammates do as well. You just go out there and just play. You shouldn t think of it as being rough or brutal. In my mind, I don t think anything is rough. I take each day at a time just like I approach the game, one game at a time, just play ball and do what I m told.
On whether his days of getting in practice field fisticuffs are over:
It is behind me, but the one thing that I can t stop is being competitive and that s just who I am and how I m always going to be. I m going to be competitive all the time. I m going to try my best not to lose and most of the time I m going to try to win. That s just how it s going to be and if the other guy across from me doesn t like it, then he is just going to have to deal with it and it s just going to be that way. After we leave the field and come game time we are going to be best of friends. I wouldn t take it as anything. That s just how I practice.
On Coach Singletary s view on fighting during practice:
He does not like fighting. If you fight, then he will run the whole team. That s his philosophy. Like I said, if a guy is getting beat real bad in practice, he doesn t like it and gets mad, then that s on him. I don t think you can run the team because of that. Coach Singletary, I agree with him. I don t think there should be fighting. We don t have time for that. We ve got to move on and keep things moving and try to win games.

DE Justin Smith
On whether he likes the way things are set up for training camp:
Yes, I think we are in a position - we ve got the talent and the players that we think we need. Now, it s just a matter of putting it all together and going out and winning games. The first four or five games we are playing about everybody in our division, so it s going to be a huge month in September.
On his position being more defined this season:
I m definitely more comfortable and you know exactly what position you are going to be playing and we know exactly what kind of defense we are going to be playing. We are going to be playing a 3-4 pretty much, just go out there and get them. We are planning on our guys being better than their guys most of the time. Now it s just a matter of us going out there and actually doing it.
On whether the fact that Coach Singletary has been through a training camp as a player makes him less skeptical of the training camp schedule:
That s the thing. He s actively done it. I m sure under Buddy Ryan they were hitting twice a day. That s all they did back then. The first couple of weeks they were probably getting in shape and those sorts of things because they didn t have as many OTAs and things like that. He s been through it. It s no problem. He s definitely speaking from experience so that definitely makes what he s saying mean a whole lot more two weeks into it.

LB Takeo Spikes
On what he expects from Coach Singletary heading into training camp:
What I expect from Coach Singletary is we are going to hit the ground running. What I mean by that is I m pretty sure he wants to see who s going to be all in, who is going to be his players as far as stepping up to the plate, not only when it s time for you to do it when you are fresh. As these weeks go on, days go on you are going to become tired. That s just the reality of it. I think that s what he really wants to see. He wants to see how guys are going to respond to the adversity.
On whether he s ever been a part of a training camp with such a gap between reporting day and the first day of practice:
I ve never seen that. I ve never been a part of that, but I will be the first one to tell you, I m not complaining because as of right now, we break on September 1, if I m not mistaken. I ll take every day that s a teaching day. I ll take everyday that s a walk and greet, or whatever you want to call it because when we start up, then you are committed for six and half, seven months.
On whether he s been told he ll be given time off because he is a veteran:
I really don t have a schedule because I think once you go into camp, as a veteran guy like myself, in my opinion you just can t go in and say, I m going to go in this day and take this day off because you don t know. I like to go until my body tells me, You know what, let s back off a little bit. Let s take a rest. If I feel something coming on, then I ll take advantage of the time that has been given to me and that is the way I m going to play it this year.
On what he did differently this offseason with his workout:
Usually my last two weeks of training before camp comes up, that s when I usually do my two-a-days and the two-a-days consist of lifting, running, that s all one workout. I ll take a break and come back and do some sort of functional activity, whether it s working on pass rush moves. I did a lot of boxing, but modified boxing to where-just open hand stuff that simulates football movements. I did a lot of that and Parys [Haralson] did a lot of that with me. He was kind of my training buddy, him and Osi Umenyiora. We worked very hard and I think doing that kind of stuff over a five week time period, I really feel good.
On the passing of Jim Johnson:
It was devastating. The reason why was because it happened all of a sudden. I lost my father to brain cancer. It was somewhat similar to the way he was diagnosed in January and passed in October and that s the same thing with Jim. It happened towards the end of the season last year and now he s passing. So what he meant to the Philadelphia Eagles family, not only to the family, but the fans, the stability, credibility, I think he was the typical or ideal example of excellence. That s what he represented.

On the physicality of this year s camp:
If you know Singletary, you know that he s known for his intensity and being physical with an F as he puts it. So I expect it to be a physical and intense training camp with a lot of competition, a lot of energy. Pretty much compare it to other camps and we ll see how it goes when it gets started.
On what the team expects leading to Saturday s first practice:
A lot of team meetings. We have a meeting tonight at six and some position meetings after that and tomorrow we have a full day of meetings and get in the playbook and then get everything ready for Saturday so we can go out there and not waste any reps.
On taking more of a leadership role this year:
I feel like I do. I ve been able to play ever since I ve been a rookie here and going into my third year I feel like myself and guys like Patrick [Willis] and the young guys on our team need to step up and become more vocal and become the next generation of leaders on this team,Big & Tall Denver Broncos Jersey. I ve always been the captain of every team I ve been on, basically, college and high school. I don t really have any problems speaking my mind. I also feel that it s something that you earn you ve got to earn it and show it on the field.

LB Patrick Willis
On the start of training camp:
I m prepared for a great camp. I know that this camp is going to be brutal. It s going to be crucial. It s going to be very important to how our season plays out for us. The work that we re going to put in, the way that we re going to go about doing things, the way that we re going to carry out our mission, as I like to call it, on both sides of the ball on defense, offense and special teams of course. I think that it s going to be great for us.
On looking forward to Saturday s start of practices:
You can t dread it, this is what we do. This is our life. Sometimes you re not going to feel like it, but it s part of football. That s what comes along with it and that s what our head coach wants. That s what we ve got to do.
On getting an opportunity to start hitting again:
That s what I love. I miss the hitting. I ve been working out all of July and that was fun, but at the same time, I ve been missing what I love to do and that s football.Just being out there on the field and doing your profession. That s what I miss and it s almost game time, so I m getting excited.
